Upcoming Friend-Raising Event!

FINALLY... winter in New England! After 16+ inches of fresh powder we're just beginning to earn our spring fever. We've been spending LOTS of time indoors preparing for this upcoming seasons expeditions! 

In between phone calls with perspective partners, we find ourselves excitedly peering out the window awaiting our newest backpacking equipment deliveries! Another box of sleeping bags and sleeping pads should arrive in the next couple of weeks making our gear stores complete for 13 participants!  We're feeling deep gratitude for the wonderful and generous people who supported our Gear Raiser this past fall. We would not be where we are today without your support!!



ANNOUNCING FRIEND-RAISING EVENT!!

We are hosting a FRIEND-RAISING event on April 2nd from 12:00-3:00 pm at the beautiful and historic Holcomb Farm property in Granby, CT. There are no obligations, financial or otherwise, for attending this event. We promise fun along with information.



What is a "FRIEND-RAISING" you ask? 


It is a gathering for folks like yourself who have expressed interest, curiosity or support of Outside Perspectives.  It is a chance to learn about the program, to share and eat delicious food together, and to meet and connect with others who are invested in getting youth outdoors! We’re looking for community connections with people who are interested in our mission and who might be in a position to help us.  Support could look like introductions to youth organizations, connections with possible funders, becoming a board member, keeping an eye out for opportunities to help us in the future, and sharing our mission via word of mouth. Our itinerary will include a  short presentation, Q&A, conversation, home-made brick oven pizzas (made on the spot!), and to practice what we preach, an optional stroll in the woods and fields around the farm. If you know of anyone else who might be interested in joining us for this event, feel free to share this announcement. We'd love to meet them! Kids are welcome as well. The event will take place at Holcomb Farm workshop space at 113 Simsbury Rd, West Granby, CT 06090 from 12:00-3:00 pm on April 2nd, 2017. As we will have some optional time outdoors, it is recommended to dress accordingly. You are welcome to stay as little or as long as you like. We have reserved a heated indoor space with restrooms.

Waterbury Youth Spend Two Days Exploring Local Parks with Outside Perspectives

Outside Perspectives facilitated two team-building days with a group of inspiring individuals from Waterbury Youth Services  on July 26th at Hamilton Park and August 9th at Fulton Park, in Waterbury. The team brought great energy both days and a willingness to step up, diving into the challenges presented to them. As a group, we explored some of Waterbury's hidden natural spaces, laughed a lot, soaked up sun, got to know odd and interesting things about each other,  and successfully completed several group initiatives, including Pipeline (see image to the left). "Future Leaders" Bronx Adventure

Superheros! Outside Perspectives and Future Leaders youth spent May 14th geocaching and exploring wild and natural spaces in Van Cortlandt Park , Bronx, NY. Outside Perspectives co-founders, Shannon and Nicky met the group at the last stop on the 1 line,  242nd St., on a sunny Saturday morning.  The day felt joyful as the youth soaked up the sun and practiced map and compass skills, played games, solved team challenges and devoured a picnic lunch on a high rocky outcropping overlooking the park. The Future Leaders were fully engaged offering their unique perspective on the challenges of the day. Spotlight on: Board Member, Emily Hazelton

Emily Hazelton has been wandering the woods of northwest Connecticut since early childhood.  Emily at Signal Hill, with Lions Head in the background, in South Africa A native of Thomaston, she witnessed firsthand the transformative power of outdoor recreation in children's lives working her first job as a camp counselor at YMCA Camp Mataucha. After completing a degree in government and social justice with the Ozanam scholars program at St John's University, Emily worked in special education and disability services before pursuing a passion for environmental and corporate sustainability.
